Living Christmas Trees.
If you've recently purchased, or are considering purchasing a potted living Christmas Tree, here's some handy tips for getting the most from your tree.
What to do with your living Christmas Trees.
Living Christmas trees are intended to be grown outdoors, whether it's to bring some festive spirit to your deck, entrance or patio as an ornamental tree or to plant in the garden.
Note: These trees will not last well indoors. While you can bring them inside for one week in the lead up to Christmas, they shouldn't be left indoors for longer than that.
Growing your Christmas Tree in a pot outdoors.
- Keep your potted tree in partial to full sun.
- Water during the dry months, twice per week.
- Add balanced fertilizer during spring.
- Repot into a larger pot every two years.
Growing your Christmas Tree in your garden.
- Pick a sunny spot allowing room to grow.
- Dig a hole twice the size of root ball.
- Add some free draining soil when planting.
- Add balanced fertlizer in the spring time.
Trimming and shaping your Christmas Tree.
Use sharp garden shares to trim your tree in a cone shape, one or twice per year. The ideal times to trim are April to set the tree's shape, then October for a small tidy up.
When kept in a pot the tree will remain relatively compact, but when planted in the garden you will need to trim regularly to avoid the tree growing too big. We don't recommend letting them grow above 3 metres in a suburban setting.
